Q. A couple of years ago I purchased a Ferrograph 2A.Whilst I have
been generally happy with the machine, there is a problem
that bothers me, and I have no Idea how to fix it.
The tape path seems to be out of alignment with the reels. That is, when the
tape enters or exits the head cover, it scrapes along the
inside of the spool. I have tried many different spools and the results are the
same.
When I look at the tape as it runs, it is clear to me that either the head
assembly has dropped a little in relation to the spools or the spindles
have somehow risen higher than they should. There are tape guides present on
this model, but they are of the flat
bakelite type that is curved. The tape sits on this guide but it doesn't seem to
help very much.
What is the best method of correcting this problem?

A. With regard to your problem concerning reel height adjustment,
because that model wasn't fitted with adjustable tape
guides, the only course of action is to raise the height of the spool carriers.
Do not under any circumstances alter anything to do with the head channel,
the problem lies solely with the reel carriers.
The machine was originally designed to use the Ferrograph tape reels which had
thin metal flanges, and therefore sat lower on the spindle.
To adjust the reel tape height, you will need a small Allen key from memory this
should be a 1/16th imperial size.
Loosen the Allen screw which is accessed in the small hole you will see on the
edge of the spool carrier, loosen the screw a little and pull the
carrier up or down as required but don't do too much. You will have to check how
much by checking the alignment on a typical spool type. Retighten the screw and
try to use the same type of spools in future if possible.
